Checklist for home
owners to save money on their energy use
þ Install a programmable thermostat to keep your house comfortable warm in the winter and comfortable cool in the summer.
þ Use compact fluorescent light bulbs with the ENERGY STAR label.
þ Air-dry dishes instead of using your dishwasher’s drying cycle.
þ Turn off your computer and monitor when not in use.
þ Plug home electronics, such as TVs and DVD players, into power strips; turn the power strips off when the equipment is not in use. TVs and DVDs in standby mode still use several watts of power.
þ Lower the thermostat on your hot water heater to 120 F.
þ Take short showers instead of baths.
þ Wash only full loads of dishes and clothes.
þ Add Insulation to your attic.
þ Clean or replace filters on furnaces once a month or as needed.
þ Look for ENERGY STAR label on home appliances and products. ENERGY STAR products meet strict efficiency guidelines set by the US Dept. of Energy and the EPA.
